Diljit Dosanjh scripted history as he became the first Punjabi singer ever to perform at the famous Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2023 in California.

The singer's performance saw a massive crowd and the audience, which included several celebs as well, were seen grooving to some desi music presented by none other than Diljit.

Diljit performed twice at Coachella, however, something that he said during his second performance sparked controversy, to the extent that he had to clarify it on social media.

Diljit's 'Don't spread hate' comment sparks controversy

It so happened that during his performance, Diljit pointed at a girl holding the tricolour, and addressing the crowd, he said, "Eh mere Punjabi bhain bhraawan layi, mere desh da jhanda laike khadi aa kudi, eh mere desh layi, negativity ton bacho, music saareyan da saanjha."

This roughly translates to, "This girl is carrying the flag of my country, this is for my country and everyone. Music belongs to all, don't use it to spread hate."

However, a section of the internet misunderstood the statement and claimed that the singer accused the girl of inciting hatred by waving the Indian tricolour.

Dijit Dosanjh hits back at trolls

As Twitter buzzed with hate and trolling against Diljit, the singer finally broke his silence and took to the microblogging site to school the netizens.

He tweeted, "DON'T SPREAD FAKE NEWS & NEGATIVITY! Mai Kiha Eh Mere Desh Da Jhanda Hai Eh Mere Desh Lai.. Means MERI Eh Performance Mere desh Lai. Je Punjabi Nhi Aundi Tan Google Kar leya Karo Yaar...Kion ke Coachella Ek Big Musical Festival Aa Othey Har desh to log aunde ne.. that's why Music Sab Da Sanjha Hai. This translates to, "I had said that she got my country's flag here, and my performance here is for my country. If you don't understand Punjabi then please Google because Coachella is a big music festival which is attended by people from across the world. That's why music is for everyone. One should learn from you guys how to twist words!"
