Mumbai: In the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case, the Bandra police will submit the chargesheet in the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Bandra by March-end. As per law, the police must file the chargesheet within 60 days. A police officer said, “We have many positive reports and ample evidence.” On January 16, the actor was stabbed multiple times by an intruder during an alleged robbery attempt at his home in Bandra West.

The attacker, Shariful Islam, 30, a Bangladeshi national, fled the scene but was arrested on January 19. He is currently in judicial custody and incarcerated in Arthur Road Jail. The police believe the case against Shariful Islam is strong enough to procure a conviction.

During the identification parade, the actor’s staff recognised him. His facial recognition test came back positive. The fingerprints, which were found in the building’s duct, also matched. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 9) Dikshit Gedam said, “We have received all the relevant reports, and we are confident that Shariful committed the crime.”

The chargesheet includes over 25 statements. Among them are statements from eyewitnesses, Khan’s staffers Eliyamma Philip and Junu, four other staff members, besides Khan and his actor wife Kareena Kapoor. The list also includes statements from Shariful’s acquaintance and employer, Jitendra Pandey. Shariful has only one relative residing in India, his maternal uncle, whose statement has also been recorded.

On record is also a statement from a woman, Khukumoni Jahangir Sheikh, in West Bengal, whose mobile phone was stolen by Shariful and used later. The investigation has revealed that Shariful’s motive was purely theft. He was unaware that the house belonged to the actor.
