An Anticipated Formation
The Samyukta Maharashtra movement, a decades-long fight for a distinct state based on linguistic identity, came to an end with the creation of Maharashtra. Areas that spoke Marathi were a part of the bilingual Bombay State before 1960. The Samyukta Maharashtra movement, which acknowledged the unique cultural and linguistic legacy of the Marathi people, promoted the merging of Marathi-speaking regions into a single state.

These hopes were eventually realized with the passage of the Bombay Reorganization Act of 1960 by the Indian Parliament. The act became operative on May 1st, 1960, resulting in the creation of Gujarat and Maharashtra, two new states. This acknowledged the significance of linguistic identity in statehood and represented a major turning point in Indian history.
