Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Indore, known for its exceptional cleanliness and waste management, is now taking a significant step toward sustainability by transforming its zoo into a zero-waste facility.

Municipal Commissioner Shivam Verma announced this initiative on Thursday during his visit to the zoo, where he inspected various facilities and discussed future plans with other officials.

During the visit, Verma emphasised the importance of proper waste management within the zoo premises. He stated that the wet waste generated in the zoo would be composted on-site rather than being transported elsewhere.

The entire system will be designed in such a way that the zoo will function without producing any waste, making it an eco-friendly and self-sustaining establishment.

"Our vision is to ensure that Indore Zoo is recognised as a zero-waste zoo, and we are working towards this goal with a well-planned strategy," he added. Apart from waste management, Verma also issued directives to clean the river that flows through the zoo. He pointed out that the zoo has sufficient space for waste collection and processing, allowing for efficient disposal and recycling of organic waste.

Sit on benches made of fallen leaves, plant trimmings

Additionally, green waste such as fallen leaves and plant trimmings is being repurposed to create benches, contributing further to the sustainability efforts. The zoo also has a workshop where enclosures and fencing are constructed, reducing the need for outsourcing and making maintenance more cost-effective.

Boating and other amusements

As part of its ongoing development, the zoo is also working on enhancing its tourism appeal. One of the key plans includes starting boating services in a one-kilometre stretch of the river within the zoo premises. The area is currently undergoing a cleaning and restoration process, and municipal boats will be repurposed to offer visitors a new recreational experience. This initiative is expected to make the zoo more attractive for tourists and improve the overall visitor experience.
