Actor Henry Cavill has officially confirmed that he is set to hang up his cape as Superman.
On Thursday morning, the star took to his Instagram handle to pen a moving note, announcing the end of his journey as 'Superman' and thanking his fans for all the love and support.
"I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman," he wrote.
He went on to share, "After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life."
Cavill further mentioned, "The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."
Thanking his fans, he concluded the note, stating, "For those who have been by my side through the years…..we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember…. Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards."
The news left 'Superman' fans across the world shocked and devastated, with people flooding the comments section with their love for the actor.
'Superman' director James Gunn took to his Twitter handle to announce that a film on the super hero's early life has been finalised, and thus, Cavill won't be playing the part.
"But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future," he wrote.
Cavill was last seen as Superman in DC's latest release, 'Black Adam'.
The news of Cavill not playing Superman comes as a shocker for DC fans days after the makers announced that the third installment of 'Wonder Woman', starring Gal Gadot, has also been cancelled.
