Karachi: Three terrorists, who were allegedly involved in the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009, were killed in a police encounter in Lahore on Sunday.

According to the police, the deceased have been identified as Zubair alias Naik Muhammad, Abdul Wahab, Adnan Arshad and Attiqur Rehman.

Three were directly involved in the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009, whereas Rehman was a prime suspect in Moon Market bombing in Lahore in 2008, reports the Express Tribune.

According to the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), local authorities had received information regarding terrorists hiding in a building in Lahore’s Manawan area. As police entered the area, they were ambushed by seven terrorists resulting in an hour-and-and-a-half long gun battle killing four attackers.

However, the others were successful in fleeing the scene but the CTD has already started a search operation.

“The police team, which came under attack from terrorists, returned fire, killing four of them on the spot while the remaining three managed to escape,” said a CTD spokesperson.

The attack of Sri Lankan cricket team claimed the lives of seven police officials, and injured seven players including Mahela Jayawaredene, Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera, Tharanga Paranavitana and Chaminda Vaas.
