West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Kalaikunda in Paschim Medinipur district, and submitted a preliminary report on the damages caused by cyclone 'Yaas' in the state, a senior official said.
Modi flew down to Odisha earlier in the day to review the post-cyclone situation, and then made his way to West Bengal, where the storm wreaked havoc in the coastal districts.
The meeting between the two leaders lasted for around 15 minutes, he said.
"The CM has briefed PM Modi about the situation in the worst-hit areas of the state," the official told.
However, in a rare violation of the protocol, Banerjee kept the PM waiting for 30 minutes, attended the Cyclone review meet briefly and left even while the deliberations and damage assessment was on, says the Newsroom Post.
However, CM Banerjee said to ANI, "PM had called meeting. We didn't know I had meeting in Digha. I went to Kalaikunda & gave PM report, asking for Rs 20,000 Cr- Rs 10,000 cr each for Digha Development & Sundarban Development. I told him you (state's officials) wanted to meet me. I took his permission & left."
Governer of West Bengal, Jagdeep Dhankar also condemned Banerjee's ettiquete. He wrote on Twitter, "It would have served interests of state and its people for CM and officials @MamataOfficial o attend Review Meet by PM. Confrontational stance ill serves interests of State or democracy. Non participation by CM and officials not in sync with constitutionalism or rule of law."
This news has upset a lot of Indian citizens who believe that CM Banerjee disrespected PM Modi with this behaviour.
Here's what people are saying. Have a look.
