Ujjain: Ujjainites can now taste the best of the king of mangoes, Alphonso at the city’s first ‘Alphonso festival’ which began at Mungi square on Friday.
These superior quality mangoes from Devgad are known for their rich saffron pulp, super rich aroma, smooth exterior and thin skin. Seven farmers from Devgad district of Maharashtra are selling these farm fresh, organically cultivated mangoes at the festival. The price range for the mangoes is Rs 700-1100 per dozen. It has been a common practice for vendors in Ujjain to sell similar looking mangoes under the name ‘Alphonso’ as most people here have not had a taste of the original ones.
Peoples’ Perspective
“For many years I have noticed that it impossible to find original Alphonso mangoes in Ujjain. Fruit sellers pass off mangoes coming from Karnataka and other states as Alphonso. So, in order to provide a chance for Ujjainites to taste and experience the richness of pure Devgad Alphonso, we have organised this festival. Also, this is a platform for farmers to sell this superior product to customers. Devgad Alphonso is known for its taste all over the world. Climatic conditions, soil and water of Devgad district give these mangoes this superior quality and taste, which cannot be found in mangoes from in other parts of the country.”- Akanksha Mungi, Organiser
“As you can’t buy original Alphonsos in Ujjain, I get them from Pune every season. Some vendors sell fake qualities, but you can only differentiate if you have tasted the original. I think this is a commendable initiative.”- Shrikant Patil, Professional
“Youngsters will love this fest as they are very fond of trying new things especially anything related to food. I also feel that, the taste and quality these mangoes offer are unparalleled. Drinks like Maza and Fruity do not come anywhere close in taste.”- Mayank, Student
“I have been in the food industry so I understand the different qualities of mango and I must say Devgad Alphonso is best in taste. Also, this festival will give city dwellers a chance to experience the best quality of mangoes.”
Archana Gogulwar, Food Technologist
“I have come with my son and already loved the mangoes. The aroma is really rich and texture is smooth. I have never seen this super rich quality of mangoes in Ujjain. Surely a good opportunity for us to taste original Alphonso without fear of fake quality being sold by local vendors.”- Amir Sultan, Businessman
