Ujjain : Stray dogs have attacked 10 people at Nagjhiri area in last 24 hours all thanks to the Ujjain Municipal Corporation’s (UMC), who has failed to check the stray dog menace in the city.

This has forced children and elderly to stay indoors. The dogs have bitten 10 residents including one child. Residents fear venturing out in the morning and evening hours. Kashinath a PHE employee was mauled by pack of stray dogs on Wednesday, while he was on a morning walk. The victim was rushed to Civil Hospital where he given treatment and was administered anti-Rabies injection. Other victims also reached at the Civil Hospital for treatment. Two other people were also bitten by the dogs in Heera Mill Ki Chawl and Ashok Nagar area on Wednesday. Both were administered injections at Madhav Nagar hospital. When contacted an UMC official said, a dog-catcher tem would be sent to the area. Both government hospitals are witnessing at least 10-15 cases of dog bite.

While the authorities concerned continue to maintain apathy towards the mounting menace of stray animals, the residents are an agitated and have demanded that the issue should be handled firmly and all those responsible for the prevalence of such conditions should be taken to task and levied heavy penalties. Stray animals, including cows, bulls and dogs roaming on the busy streets, congested roads and even residential areas, are a common sight. The number of stray dogs in city is on the rise, while UMC is not even thinking about the sterilisation programme. The dog pound method is not effective enough as either the dog catching drive is conducted on the knock of media or the dogs are released on outskirts of city because dog pounds are full.

Accidents related to stray cattle are reported frequently. The problem has attained such menacing proportions that these stray cows and bulls have started attacking passersby including women and children, inflicting serious injuries, which at times proves to be fatal. However, the issue does not seem to have caught the attention of the local authorities yet. Stray dogs are more dangerous menace, often chasing and barking at the motorists and pedestrians. The residents maintain that they were fed up with the nuisance of stray animals and have complained to the government officials umpteen times. However, no action has been taken so far. However, amidst all these promises, a lasting solution remains elusive, feel concerned citizens.

BJP leader opposes new pound at Sadawal

Raising a voice against the mismanagement and apathy of the UMC over stray dog issue city president of BJP Scheduled Tribe Morcha, Prakash Parmar has accused UMC of adopting faulty policies and doing experiments over the city on residents’ money. Parmar alleged that the UMC has set the balls rolling for a new dog pound at village Sadawal near sewage treatment plant. Parmar said the existing dog pound is encroached upon by local hooligans and even the pound guard is helping them. Instead of keeping stray dogs the pound area is being used for personal parking and storage. Even an illegal room has been constructed at the pound area. Parmar added the land choice for constructing the new land pound at Sadawal is wrong and I oppose it, the UMC should re think the decision. The proposed dog pound is just 20-30 meters away from residential colonies of the area such as Ranjeet Nagar. Also many farmers have their farm land near the proposed pound site. Parmar said, I have written to minister Paras Jain and municipal commissioner regarding the issue. Parmar is a resident of village Sadawal.
