Heavy rains lash city, throw life out of gear City receives 65 mm of rainfall in 24 hrs

Ujjain : Heavy rains lashed the city and its adjoining areas throwing normal life out of gear. After basking in little sunshine through the week, the city was left awash by heavy rains which started late on Tuesday.

As per the Government Jiwajirao Observatory, mercury’s various moods can be attributed to the Western Disturbances which have wreaked chaos this entire year. The rain gauge at the observatory recorded 65 mm of rain in past 24 hours,the observatory also have predicted more rains in coming days. The minimum temperature recorded on Wednesday was 21.8 degree Celsius and maximum temperature was recorded at 27.4 degree Celsius.

City residents faced inconvenience due to heavy rain, which triggered waterlogging, traffic snarls and power cuts.The rain once again exposed the ineffectiveness of the campaign launched to clean road gullies and sewer, which is yet to be completed by the Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC). The UMC had allotted work of around Rs 10 lakhs for cleaning road gullies.

Waterlogging was reported from various parts of the city. In Ekta Nagar and Indira Nagar, residents faced inconvenience due to waterlogged roads.In many areas, the UMC staff was busy cleaning road gullies to solve the waterlogging problem.The worst-affected were residents of Narsingh Ghat locality, RamanujKot, GangaurDarwaja, Manchhaman colony, Neelganga area, and many other colonies on the Sanwer road. People said the sanitation wing of the UMC claimed to launch regular sanitation drives in the city, but the truth was different. On the othe hand, the district administration along with the police department remained on alert and jointly shifted the affected people to safe places and the shelters created by the UMC. Also a UMC team was also deployed to identify the dangerous houses and vacate them around the city, to avoid any untoward incident.

Power cuts, irate residents ransack discom zone office

Besides waterlogging, residents also faced power cuts in both eastern and southern parts of the city due to the rain. As the Kshipra water reached the Kartikmela grounds and other nearby areas the step-down transformers were shut down to prevent spreading of electric current and many other got damaged. Besides, power cuts were reported from southern parts in the evening hours due to some snag. Same was the condition in the new city areas including colonies located beside the Dewas Road, Indore Road, Sanwer Road. The irate consumers of the Mahashweta distribution zone, on Wednesday morning ransacked the zone office of the discom and chased away the staff, after the electricity did not return to their houses after 12 hours. The agitated mob threw away the equipment and tore open the door of the zone office. The electronics of the zone office was thrown in a well located inside the zone office. Reports of clash between consumers and bouncers also came out from the spot. The company officials lodged a complaint with the Madhav Nagar police who registered a complaint against unknown persons.
