Ujjain : Garbage piles are still a matter of concern for residents in the city as heaps these of these can still be seen lying at the various areas of the city.The interesting report is that a special sanitation drive focused on wards and zones is underway by the Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC).
Repeated pleas and efforts of the public appears to have failed to prick the conscience of senior functionaries of the UMC, and the Health Department, as these heaps of garbage has piled up but the authorities brag up about their instructions and orders. Heaps of garbage, overflowing garbage bins and choked drains in various localities are a common site.
The silt removed from sewer lines is not lifted from roads for days, causing inconvenience to commuters. Other residents say the lack of civic sense among residents, commitment among safai workers and sanitation supervisory staff, besides shortage of sanitation staff and un-coordinated efforts of UMC officials had aggravated the problem.Garbage collected from shops and homes is thrown in the open. The sweepers and municipal staff dump garbage around the bins. Government officials, Deputy Commissioners and political leaders have launched various cleanliness campaigns from time to time. However, the supervisory staff and other senior officials of the local administration have little time to ensure sanitation in the town. Public toilets at many areas are in bad shape.
Similarly, people smoking at public places and those consuming liquor are allowed to carry on with their anti-cleanliness acts despite making numerous complaints to the UMC. The health authorities fail to issue penalties to those smoking at public places in the city. While the hotel owner allows parking of vehicles where unscrupulous elements sit in their cars to consume liquor, a large number of youngster’s smokes at the shop of cigarette sellers.
