Ujjain : Lakhs took dip in the Kshipra on the occasion Makar Sankranti here on Friday. Braving the chilly weather, devotees thronged the Kshipra ghats, particularly the Ram Ghat.
The devotees offered ‘Arghya’ to the sun after taking holy dip. Roads leading to Kshipra banks were abuzz with vehicular traffic right from the wee hours. By the time the sun appeared clearly in the sky, hundreds of devotees had taken a holy dip at Ramghat. However, the turnout of devotee was low as confusion prevailed over the exact dates of Makar Sankranti. Various temples had organised a special prayer for this day. Devotees attended the morning ‘aarti’ at Mahakal temple.
While many paid their obeisance to the sun god in the early morning. At Ramghat and big temples of the city Makar Sankranti was celebrated by extending helping hand to the needy and downtrodden. Besides making donations in cash and kind, residents also organised Bhandaras and distributed food items specially Khichari. Social and religious organisations also organised functions to distribute woollens and shoes among children and students. ASP Amrendra Singh said the religious bath passed-off peacefully with the police being in place since last evening. Elaborate arrangements were made for the pilgrims he said. Although we had thought the occasion as a rehearsal for us but the low turnout helped us.
