With India's prolific opening batter Shubman Gill likely to take more than a week to recover from his illness, the management has pondered a replacement for the youngster. According to The Indian Express, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal are in the frame to replace Gill in the World Cup squad should he not recover on time.
Gill, currently suffering from dengue, missed India's 1st 2023 World Cup match against Australia in Chennai and has been ruled out of their next game against Afghanistan on Wednesday in Delhi. To make matters worse, the 24-year-old is highly unlikely to play against Pakistan on October 14th at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
While Yashasvi Jaiswal is yet to play an ODI, Gaikwad has featured in 4 of them, but doesn't have impressive numbers. The right-handed batter filled in for Rohit Sharma in 2 out of 3 ODIs in the recent ODI series against Australia and averages 26.50 with 106 runs.

Meanwhile, Team India couldn't have asked for a better start to their 2023 World Cup campaign as Rohit Sharma and co. romped home by six wickets against Australia in Chennai. The hosts took full advantage of the spinning conditions as Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravichandran Ashwin spun a web around the Aussie batters to skittle them for 199.
Later, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli shared a 165-run stand to propel India over the line after India succumbed to 2-3.
