In an effort to reduce traffic congestion and provide adequate parking facilities, the Nashik Municipal Corporation's (NMC) Traffic Cell is set to launch smart pay-and-park facilities at 35 locations across the city. Additionally, towing actions are being considered to address unruly parking and ensure compliance.
Senior officials from the NMC expressed that the city is grappling with a severe parking crisis due to a lack of designated parking spaces, with roads increasingly being misused for vehicle parking rather than traffic movement. To tackle this issue, the civic body has activated its Traffic Cell, prioritising solutions for the parking problem.
Municipal Commissioner Manisha Khatri has directed the preparation of a detailed parking plan. As a result, the Traffic Cell has identified on-street and off-street parking spaces with a total capacity for 4,850 vehicles, including 3,300 two-wheelers and 1,550 four-wheelers. The tender process for implementing the parking system is expected to begin soon.
However, concerns remain regarding driver compliance. Many drivers may avoid using designated parking spaces due to associated fees and continue to park on roads. To address this, the Traffic Cell is considering incorporating towing services into the parking tender.
The Traffic Cell has sought a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the city traffic police to initiate the parking system. Although towing traditionally falls under police jurisdiction, the municipal corporation has signalled its readiness to manage towing independently through its Traffic Cell.
