World Health Day 2025: BMC Launches 'Salt And Sugar Awareness' Campaign To Combat Diabetes And Hypertension In Mumbai

On the occasion of World Health Day on Monday, April 7, the BMC has launched a 'Salt and Sugar Awareness' campaign. The objective is to reduce the salt and sugar intake by Mumbaikars and prevent non-communicable diseases (NCD), like diabetes and high blood pressure in the future generations.

Mumbai: On the occasion of World Health Day on Monday, April 7, the BMC has launched a 'Salt and Sugar Awareness' campaign. The objective is to reduce the salt and sugar intake by Mumbaikars and prevent non-communicable diseases (NCD), like diabetes and high blood pressure in the future generations. The awareness will be done via digital platforms, labels on food items etc.

"Various studies have shown that excessive intake of salt and sugar leads to diseases like diabetes, blood pressure and heart diseases. Indians consume 9 grams of salt everyday, against the recommended intake of 5 grams, a report by World Health Organisation (WHO) says. As per 2021 study, 34% of Mumbaikars suffer from high blood pressure and 18% from diabetes. The study was conducted by BMC's Public Health Department in association with WHO," a statement released by BMC's health department on Monday said.

"Keeping in mind the rising number of NCD, Mumbaikars need to reduce intake of sugar and salt in the daily diet. In the awareness campaign, citizens will be informed about importance of inculcating healthy habits at an early age. The awareness will fine from digital platforms, interactive programs via chefs, dieticians etc. The campaign on also includes awareness about reading ingredients on the labels of food packets," the statement added.

The awareness initiatives will carried on school, college and community level as well.
