The wait is finally over. Tesla is all set to make its official India debut with the launch of its first showroom at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai, on July 15. The American electric vehicle (EV) giant will display two of its most popular models, the Model Y and Model 3, as it gears up to enter one of the world’s fastest-growing automobile markets.
The spotlight will be on the Model Y, which is expected to be the first Tesla on sale in India. Available globally in two variants, Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD (Dual Motor), the SUV promises an impressive range of up to 574 km and goes from 0 to 100 kmph in just 4.6 seconds. Five India-assembled Model Y units have already landed in Mumbai, reportedly priced at around ₹27.7 lakh ($31,988) each. However, the catch lies in import duties, a steep 70% tariff on EVs under $40,000 is expected to push the total cost past ₹48 lakh, even before GST and insurance are factored in.
The Model 3, Tesla’s most affordable offering, will also be showcased but is expected to go on sale later in 2025. The top variant of the Model 3 clocks 0 to 100 kmph in 3.1 seconds, has a range of 507 km, and a top speed of 162 kmph. With its US base price of $29,990 (₹25.99 lakh) and a reduced 15% import duty under the new EV policy, the Model 3 could carry an ex-showroom price of around ₹29.79 lakh. However, once local taxes and registration fees are added, the on-road price is likely to cross ₹40 lakh, putting it in direct competition with the likes of the BYD Seal.
Tesla's launch comes on the heels of receiving a trade certificate from the Andheri RTO, allowing the brand to display, test, and sell its vehicles in India. While pricing may be steep due to import duties, the brand’s official entry signals a bold new chapter in India’s electric mobility journey.
