MBMC warns occupants of action
Bhayandar: The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has finally decided to act tough against housing societies who have failed to conduct structural audits despite notices.
This following a recent incident in which three people were injured after the flooring of their flat in Mira Road’s Matru-Chhaya building caved in.
After a comprehensive survey MBMC’s Public Works Department had issued notices to 730 buildings (mainly that are more than three decades old), to get their structures inspected by a MBMC empanelled structural engineer. Even as the dead line to submit stability certificates has passed, not more than 15 buildings have cared to follow the audit procedure.

Interestingly, the name of Matru-Chhaya building fared in the list but people continued to occupy the structure without carrying out repairs, this despite warnings from the MBMC.
Stung by the tepid response, the civic administration has now decided to send a final notice to these buildings to fall in line. “Getting repair works done is for the own safety of occupants. But if they still do not adhere with the ultimatum, we will be forced to take legal action,” warned civic chief Achyut Hange.

As per the law, it is obligatory on the part of every owner and occupier of buildings, which are more than 30 years old (or have been issued notices), to have them inspected and get the corrective repairs as suggested by the structural engineer and submit a fitness certificate to the MBMC.
