The Virar-Dahanu Road quadrupling project, aimed at creating a dedicated corridor for suburban services, has reached a significant milestone with 33% of the work now complete. Once finished, the project will help ease congestion by providing a separate route for suburban trains, which currently share tracks with long-distance services beyond Virar. The project is slated for completion by the end of 2026. Upon completion, the Virar-Dahanu Road line quadrupling project will significantly improve the efficiency and capacity of the suburban railway network, easing travel for thousands of commuters.
The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), the executing agency, has confirmed that all 31 project sheets have been approved, and critical approvals for 2 important bridges, 16 major bridges, and 67 minor bridges have been received. The project, which has a sanctioned cost of ₹3578.00 crore, is progressing steadily with substantial progress on both infrastructure and land acquisition.
According to MRVC, a total of 29.17 hectares of private land and 10.26 hectares of government land required for the project have been successfully acquired.
"Earthwork is ongoing, with significant progress made on minor and major bridge works. Notably, for Important Bridge No. 92, 536 piles, 45 pile caps, and 72 spans have already been completed. Work is progressing for Bridge No. 93, with piles and piers partially completed," said a senior officer of MRVC.

"Contracts for various sections of the project have been awarded, including the construction of station buildings, service buildings, and staff quarters at key stations like Virar, Vaitarna, Palghar, Saphale, Kelve Road, and Dahanu Road," the official further added.
According to MRVC, the construction of platforms, retaining walls, and other station infrastructure is actively progressing. Work is underway at multiple stations along the corridor, including Virar, Vaitarna, Palghar, Boisar, and Dahanu Road. Key works include the construction of residential quarters, RPF/GRP buildings, and overhead tanks at various locations.
"At Saphale, Kelve Road, and Palghar, the foundations for new facilities, including the extension of foot overbridges and platform retaining walls, are well underway. At Boisar, the development of a new goods depot and other essential infrastructure are progressing," said an official of MRVC.
