Mumbai: Suspecting his wife’s fidelity, a man in his early 30s, allegedly killed her late on Saturday night in Chembur. The deceased has been identified as Babita Shetty (29) and the accused has been identified as Suraj. The duo had been married for almost a decade and has two daughters and a three-year-old son.
The police said Suraj, who works as a security guard in a private company, reached home around 10pm and picked a fight with his wife, a homemaker over a trivial matter. In a fit of rage, Suraj then lifted a broken tile lying nearby and hit her multiple times on the face and head. The scared children, who were present in the house at the time, were hiding in adjacent room to avoid their violent father.
After he realised that she was almost dead, Suraj locked the door and ran away from the spot. The police said Babita’s parents, who live nearby, saw Suraj leaving the house in a hurry. When her mother reached home, she saw Babita lying in a pool of blood and immediately took her daughter to Govandi’s Shatabdi hospital where she was declared dead before admission.
“Babita’s mother has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Suraj, who has been booked for murder. He is still on the run,” said Shashikant Mane, senior inspector of Govandi police station. The couple, who belong to Odisha, had been staying in Mumbai on rent after getting married. After forming several teams, the Govandi police have launched a manhunt to nab absconding Suraj who has switched off his mobile phone. The investigators will record the children’s statements. Further investigations are underway.
