Mumbai: IMD issues orange alert for Mumbai till Sunday

After a respite from incessant rains during the day, heavy rains lashed the maximum city on Thursday evening, leading to three houses in a chawl in Dahisar east collapsing, killing a 26-year-old man. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and adjoining areas until Sunday.

Meanwhile, a day after the monsoon arrived in the financial capital, on Thursday Southwest monsoon covered the entire Maharashtra. " The southwest monsoon has covered the entire state of Maharashtra on Thursday afternoon. For Mumbai and adjoining areas it is expected to be heavy rainfall on June 11 and June 12, while extremely heavy rain is likely on June 13 and June 14," said Jayanta Sarkar, Deputy Director-General of IMD Mumbai.

Santacruz and Colaba recorded 231.3 mm and 85.8 mm rainfall respectively, in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Thursday.

In the first 10 days of June, Mumbai has recorded 426.9mm of rainfall against a normal of 89 mm, an excess of 338mm. The cumulative rainfall for the first ten days of this month (since June 1) in Mumbai has reached 426.9 mm, as recorded in Santacruz. as against the average monthly rainfall of 505.0 mm for June. At Colaba, 223.6 mm of cumulative rainfall has been recorded during the same period as against the average monthly rainfall of 540.9 mm.

"Light and scanty showers were observed on Thursday during the day but it seems to be a lull before the storm. Heavy to very heavy rains are likely to lash the city and suburbs between June 11 and June 15. Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Palghar, and Alibag are at risk of getting deluged during this period. Other pockets of Konkan also stand a chance of extremely heavy rains including Sindhudurg, Raigarh, Mahabaleshwar, and Ratnagiri during this period," said experts from Skymet Weather, a private weather agency.

Skymet further said, "Mumbai is getting affected from two fronts. There is a cyclonic circulation in the medium levels over east central and north Arabian Sea. Over the Bay of Bengal, low pressure is ready to come up anytime soon. The rains will continue to be like this till June 15."
