Mira-Bhayandar: The Naya Nagar police have arrested a 40-year-old woman on alleged charges of extorting money from a social worker by threatening to implicate him in a case of rape.
About The Case
In his statement to the police, the allegedly victimised social worker Ravindra Bajpai (38) who also runs a news portal said that he knew the woman Vijaylakshmi Sharma for the past more than two years when she had approached him to help organise a press conference related to an offence in which two men had raped her. However, the complainant declined her request.

On 23, December 2024, they met at the local legislator’s bungalow and exchanged mobile numbers. Minutes later, the woman called him and asked for monetary assistance of Rs 3,000 by claiming that she did not have money to buy grains and groceries. Moved by her plight Bajpai gave the money.
The requests gradually turned into demands tagged with threats and a terrified Bajpai ended up giving her a total of Rs 55,000 transfers within a span of less than two months between 23, December 2024 to 9, February 2025. However, he was shocked when the accused started calling him on WhatsApp demanding Rs 5 lakh as a one-time settlement for refraining from filing a rape case against him.

Bajpai consulted with his wife and registered a complaint at the Naya Nagar police station. An offence under section 308 (2) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for extortion was registered against the woman who was arrested and remanded to custody. Further investigations were underway.
