The Maharashtra cooperative department that takes care of decisions related also to the registered cooperative housing societies(CHS) in a recently issued order has caped the fees of government approved election observer to Rs 8,500 with members up to 250. Whereas if the cooperative housing society election takes places unopposed then the election officer will be paid Rs 4500. Similarly, CHS having members up to 100 will pay the election observer Rs 7,000 and if the elections won unopposed then the fees will be Rs 3,500.

Previously CHS have to pay fees of Rs 21,000 to the election observer. It is to be noted appointment of Election observer by societies is not mandatory. It is a provision made by the Maharashtra government in case societies who wish to have transparency can appoint a government approved observer who will take care of all election work.

MLA Ashish Shelar of Bharatiya Janata Party from Bandra West constituency tweeted, "Last yr I exposed small Mumbai Housing Society forced to pay Rs.21,000 on 10mins Society Elections - this is unfair burden! On my Demand, our BJP/SS Govt Issues Order Capping Hsg Society Election Charges to Rs.7500 upto 100 members & Rs 3500 if Elected unopposed!"

On the contrary Maharashtra Societies Welfare Association (MahaSewa) Chairman Ramesh Prabhu on capping the fees on government approved election officer hired by CHS said, "I believe the fees is too less. Corruption takes places only if someone is not paid properly. Here too the fees that need to be paid to the election officer is less and it will only lead to corruption and unfair decision."

He insisted that the fees slab should be divided into four for instance, CHS up to 50 members will pay Rs 15,000, whereas if the election takes places unopposed they should be paid Rs 10,000. while those societies with members up to 100 will pay Rs 15,000. This all bring proper working during election. In Mumbai the travelling expenses are more and during elections in the CHS, the appointed observer has to visit the building quite frequently, he asserted.
