Mumbai: Maharashtra recorded 43 additional COVID-19 cases on Sunday, raising the active total to 209, primarily from Mumbai (35 cases) and Pune district (8 cases). All current cases exhibit only mild symptoms. Since May 18, four people with pre-existing health problems have passed away, primarily due to their underlying conditions. Sunday’s tally indicated a minor drop from 47 cases recorded on Saturday.
A 21-year-old individual from Mumbra, Wasim Fahim Sayyed, died at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa after being diagnosed with COVID-19. He was hospitalized on Thursday for type one diabetes and ketoacidosis, a condition that results in elevated blood acids. The patient was swiftly transferred to intensive care and put on a ventilator, with his COVID-19 diagnosis verified the next evening.
He passed away early Saturday prior to being isolated. Hospital dean Dr. Rakesh Barot observed the swift advancement of lung infection, whereas Dr. Anirudhha Malegaonkar identified unmanaged diabetes as a contributing factor.
Following COVID-19 guidelines, no autopsy was performed, and his remains were sent back for burial ceremonies. Wasim's father asserted that his son had been diagnosed with diabetes at seven years old, stating he did not succumb to COVID-19 but to natural causes. Health surveys are being carried out in the region.
From January, the state carried out 7,389 tests, yielding 300 positive outcomes. Health officials have urged people to remain calm, comparing COVID-19 to a typical seasonal virus, and emphasized that most patients recover without difficulty.
The virus is resurfacing in Asia, especially in Singapore and Hong Kong. Mumbai reported two COVID-related deaths. The surge is linked to subvariants OF.7 and NB.1.8. WHO recognizes JN.1 as a "variant of interest." India has 266 active COVID-19 cases currently.
