BMC to spent Rs 21 crore to turn Mithi river into tourist spot

Mumbai: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has brought a proposal for the transformation of the Mithi river into a tourist spot. This proposal will be tabled in the next Standing Committee Meeting which will be held on Friday. The BMC had decided to appoint a consultant for the development of the Mithi river. BMC will spend Rs 21 crore on this project.

The BMC had floated a tender on international level for appointment of a consultant for the Mithi river development. IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, has been appointed as consultant by the tender process. BMC has planned to spend Rs 21 crore for appointing this company as consultant.

The Mithi river flows through Seepz, Marol, Bail Bazar, Kurla, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and meets in the Mahim creek which is around 17.84 kilometer (KM). Out of which only 11.84km of the river falls under BMC jurisdiction and the rest falls under Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) area.

Mithi river was known to Mumbaikars just after floods which occurred in 2005 in Mumbai, in which hundreds of people lost their lives and even property loss were reported. Earlier state government had decided to develop the Mithi river. However, BMC’s plans were to transform Mithi river as a tourist destination where people can enjoy boating.

The development of Mithi river will be conducted in four stages. To construction service road from Filter Pada in Goregaon to Powai water Department which will be of two km. In the second phase, the diversion of the sewage line from Powai Water to CST bridge Kurla and construct a sewage treatment center.

digging a tunnel from the Bapat Nullah to Ghatkopar pumping station for the sewage water. A total of 20 crore 6 lakh 64 thousand rupees will be spent on the consultant for making the Mithi river environmentally friendly.
