Indore : Maha Shivratri was celebrated in the city with enthusiasm and religious fervour, on Monday night. Thousands of devotees thronged the temples to offer special ‘puja’ on the day. There were various ‘havans’ organised in temples and homes, where people prayed for companionship and spiritual enlightenment.
Various religious and spiritual bodies organised public functions to celebrate the day. ‘Baraat’ of the lord was taken out from Shiva temples, located at Marimata and Pardeshipura, in which large number of people including females and children took part.
Elsewhere, shobhayatras were also taken out to celebrate the lord’s wedding. On the occasion, ‘bhang’ was also distributed.
According to one of the priests of a Shiva temple, it has great significance to worship Shiva on Maha Shivratri. He shared that it is believed that people who pray to lord Shiva on this night are blessed with a spiritual outlook.
“Smearing sindoor and bathing Shivling with milk signifies sanitization of the soul, offering fruits represents a long life and fulfilment of desires while lighting of the lamp signifies achievement of knowledge,” the priest said.
Shivdham Gengeshwar Jyotirling temple at Pardeshipura, Gopeshwar Mahadev temple in Gandhi Hall, Jabreshwar Mahadev temple at Rajwada, Indreshwar Mahadev temple at Pandrinath, Gangeshwar Mahadev temple and others witnessed huge crowd of devotees since morning.
Similarly, a ‘maha aarti’ was performed at Bhilatdev temple and Dharawara Dham and special decoration with 251 earthen lamps was done by the members of Yuva Mandal.
