Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The reliance on traditional fuels such as coal and gas is steadily decreasing, thanks to advancements in nuclear energy and the growing adoption of solar power. Highlighting nuclear energy and sustainable technologies, Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and Secretary of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty emphasised the significance of exploring new energy alternatives to reduce pollution and promote energy security.
His remarks came during the inauguration of the four-day "International Union of Materials Research Societies - International Conference in Asia (IUMRS-ICA) 2024' and the "6th Indian Materials Conclave (IMC)" at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya's UTD campus. The event, organised jointly by the UGC-DAE Consortium for Scientific Research (UGC-DAE CSR), Raja Ramanna Center for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), and IIT Indore brought together over 700 delegates from across the country.
The conference aims to facilitate the exchange of scientific knowledge, innovative ideas, and research in material sciences.
Mohanty stressed the role of nuclear energy in driving technological advancements. "State-of-the-art technology is integral to the design, construction, and operation of nuclear power plants, fostering innovation across science and engineering fields," he noted. He highlighted how research and development in nuclear energy has given rise to advanced energy systems, playing a pivotal role in environmental protection.
Focus on Sustainable
Technologies The conference also addressed the environmental challenges associated with current technologies. UGC chairman Dr Jagadesh Kumar underscored the importance of balancing technological progress with environmental sustainability.
He pointed out the growing use of solar energy and the environmental concerns posed by lithium-based batteries, which are not biodegradable. "We need to explore new, sustainable options for energy storage and generation," he urged, calling on young researchers to tackle these challenges.
UGC-DAE CSR Dr AJ Pal shared a milestone achievement during the event—signing a crucial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding use of the Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction Facility at the Indus-2 synchrotron source. This collaboration aims to enhance research capabilities in advanced material studies.
