Indore : Sluggish renovation work of MY Hospital is badly affecting the work of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Chacha Nehru Hospital as the latter is forced to keep two infant patients in a single warmer.
When contacted, the Chacha Nehru hospital administration expressed its helplessness and said it has to provide NICU service to large number of new-born babies including those from the MYH.
“NICU in Chacha Nehru Hospital has only 10 beds while in the MYH, the capacity is 28, but due to ongoing renovation work, it refers most of its newborn patients to NICU of Chacha Nehru Hospital,” sources said. Experts said keeping two infants in a single warmer is dangerous for both the infants.
“Keeping two infants in a warmer may prove fatal for the infants as both need different temperatures. Again, newborns have very low immunity and they might be infected,” a paediatrician of the hospital said on the condition of anonymity.
He said that the condition in NICU turned worse when referral patients from District Hospital reached here. “The Dist hospital does not have NICU and the sanctioned one has been shifted to Bhopal recently due to negligence of the administration.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Chacha Nehru Hospital Dr Sharad Thora said: “We have capacity of 28 infants in NICU but patients from other districts too reach MYH. Due to scarcity of beds, we have to keep two infants in one warmer. The NHM has sanctioned a PICU establishment in MYH which would make the things better.”
