Lok Sabha Speaker and local MP Sumitra Mahajan turned 76 on Friday but the birthday celebrations lacked enthusiasm as her supporters were disappointed over BJP’s announcement, which barred candidates above 75 years of age to contest Lok Sabha election. The supporters who hoped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will gift poll ticket to Mahajan on her birthday were disappointed.

However, the PM greeted Mahajan on her birthday. He tweeted, “Birthday greetings to Lok Sabha Speaker, Sumitra Mahajan Ji. As one of India’s senior most political leaders and parliamentarians, Sumitra Tai has made a rich contribution to India’s development and strengthening our democracy. Praying for her long and healthy life.”Her political rival and front runner for ticket Kailash Vijayvargiya also wished Mahajan on her birthday.
The day for Mahajan started with a puja at Satyanarayan temple at Pandrinath Road. After this, she did not participate in any birthday parties organised by her supporters. As per reports, she went to meet her guru and spent the day there. An-eight time MP from Indore seat, Mahajan was hopeful of ticket for the ninth time.
But when BJP did not announce her name for many days, she announced that she would not be contest Lok Sabha election. A day before her announcement, BJP president Amit Shah declared that the party has decided not to field candidates above 75 years of age.
