Indore: Nine industrial units in Sanwer Road found polluting Kanh river

The IMC and Pollution Control Board have served notices to nine industrial units in Sanwer Road industrial area for flowing effluent into Kanh river. The units have been asked to stop discharging effluent into the river soon else the units will be sealed.

Pollution Control Board (PCB) regional manager RK Gupta said the notices were served on instructions given by divisional commissioner Akash Tripathi under Kanh river rejuvenation and purification scheme.  A joint team of IMC and PCB had conduced survey of industries in Sanwer Road. Tripathi had instructed that a joint team from these departments should conduct survey in the industrial area to find units that are polluting Kanh river and action should be taken against them under Environmental Regulations Act.

Complying with the order, the assistant engineer of Indore Municipal Corporation and scientists of the PCB conducted survey of 109 industries. During the survey 25 industrial units were found violating the provisions of the Water Act, 1974 and Environment Regulations Act. All these industries were issued showcase notices.  In a review meeting on Tuesday, Tripathi was informed that nine industrial units have not yet taken measures to stop polluting the river.

According to the order of the divisional commissioner, these industries have been stopped by the pollution control board to stop the production process under Section 33A of Water (Pollution Prevention and Control) Act, 1974 and instructions given to disconnect the power connection to Power Distribution Company.

Committee constituted  to implement orders
To implement the orders of divisional commissioner in letter and spirit, an inter department committee led by concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) has also been formed. Other members of the committee include executive engineer of IMC, executive engineer of western area power distribution company, executive engineer of the PCBd and TI of police station concerned.
