Indore: The rickety residential building at Ganji Compound for which national BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya’s MLA-son Akash Vijayvargiya had assaulted a municipal official with a cricket bat some days back was demolished by Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Friday.

Armed with JCB and poclain machines, removal gang of IMC amid high police cover reached Ganji Compound and demolished the building. The IMC started the demolition drive at 10.15 pm and brought structure down within a few minutes.

Removal gang incharge Mahendra Singh Chouhan stated that building fell like pack of cards as JCB machine gave first blow to it. Ahead of demolition drive, the tenants of residential building were shifted to flats built at Bhuri Tekri.

On June 27, Akash led by BJP workers and his supporters had foiled the IMC’s bid to demolish the building alleging that it was a plan by PWD minister Sajjan Singh Verma to grab the plot on which it is erected.

He had assaulted building officer Dhirendra Bayas with a cricket bat, which landed him in prison. After coming out of the prison on bail, he stated that he had no regrets.

Tenants of building had also opposed the demolition drive and moved Indore bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court against IMC. The court ruled in favour of IMC and ordered demolition of the building.

However, it had stated that tenants should be moved to flats at Bhuri Tekri for three months till they arrange for their new accommodation.

No BJP leader opposed drive

While many BJP workers led by Akash had opposed the demolition of residential building on June 27, no BJP leader including the MLA reached Ganji Compound on Friday to interfere in IMC’s drive.

It was because Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed annoyance over Akash’s act and stated that he should be sacked. The PM had also stated that party workers who supported Akash’s conduct should also be shown doors.

Because of Modi’s tough talk, no BJP leader went to oppose the demolition drive on Friday.
