Much to the surprise of citizens, three per cent of the population in the city is suffering from depression. Moreover, it remains undetected in 85 per cent of the cases as the patient keeps him/herself busy from getting treatment for the problems caused due to depression. This was informed by the Superintendent of Government Mental Hospital Dr Ramghulam Razdan on the eve of World Health Day.

“According to World Health Organisation, depression will become the fourth biggest reason of disability by 2025. It is not a physical illness but a mental state caused due to various reason and the cause of various diseases including hypertension, blood pressure and diabetes,” Dr Razdan said. Earlier, depression was believed as a disease of old age but now, even a teenager is suffering from depression, thanks to inactiveness and still no time for themselves.

“Major reason for depression is environmental changes and inactive lifestyle. People have stop taking out time for themselves and even stopped meeting their family and friends. Due to the fast pace life, people go to work early in the morning and come home late which left no not time for them to even talk to each other,” he added.

“It is important to talk about the depression as a chase for unrealistic goals and a worry to get everything in short span are the main reason for it. People should start talking about depression and should take care of those having symptoms of it,” the expert said.

10 per cent to depression patients have suicidal tendency
Dr Razdan said that about 10 per cent of patients of depression have suicidal tendency and remain undiagnosed leading towards taking untoward action. The symptoms of depression include change in mood, negativity, appetite loss, insomnia and lack of concentration in work. “There is a type of depression which doesn’t have any symptom which is known as endogenous depression. People should see a doctor on having any mood changes for more than a month,” he added.
