Teachers in the city who completed their graduation and B Ed before 2010 from an institute that was not later recognised by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) felt at disadvantage, as they could not apply for Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET). Bringing their misery to an end, Central Board of Secondary Education addressed their issue and introduced requisite provision in the eligibility criteria.
The previous eligibility criteria stated, “The application from all such candidates who have passed their graduation with B Ed prior to NCTE principal notification dated 23/08/2010 regarding determination of minimum qualification of teachers to be appointed in school shall also be entertained by CBSE subject to final decision of Hon’ble Court(s).”
The added provision states, “The application from all such candidates who have passed their graduation with BEd prior to NCTE principal notification dated 23/08/2010 regarding determination of minimum qualification of teachers to be appointed in school shall also be entertained by CBSE subject to final decision of Hon’ble Court(s).” The new eligibility criterion is applicable to next CTET examination that will be conducted across various centres in the country on July 7, 2019.
Free Press spoke to teachers in the city and here is what they say…
“The test is mandatory for getting teaching jobs in government schools from class I to class VIII. I have always wanted to work in government schools, because I feel we need better teachers there. I have about 20 years of experience in teaching, but since I completed my education before NCTE, I could never apply for CTET.”

“This is good step from CBSE and it will help many senior teachers in applying for the exam. In my experience, most senior teachers apply for CTET as opposed to fresh ones. I feel experienced teachers will be more equipped to work in government schools as well, because experience helps them in learning various aspects of imparting knowledge.”

“CTET certificate is the minimum eligibility to get the teaching job in government schools and it is also given preference by many private schools. It adds up to qualification of a teacher. It is good that we can apply now and not have to suffer the disadvantage of studying from an institute that did not get recognition from NCTE.”
