City police on Friday booked an army jawan from Punjab for allegedly raping a city woman on the pretext of marriage. The accused met her through Facebook and befriended her. He reached the city and took victim to a hotel where he raped her. According to Vijay Nagar police station in-charge Ratnesh Mishra, the 30-year-old victim stated in her complaint stated that she was contacted by one Harshpreet Singh Chhabra, a resident of Amritsar, through Facebook last year. He befriended her and promised to marry her. The woman said that Harshpreet is an army jawan and is posted in Jammu.
He came to the city in February to meet her and took her to a hotel in Vijay Nagar area where he allegedly raped her on the promise of marriage. He later refused to marry her after returning from Indore and switched off his mobile phone. She failed to contact him. Finally, she reached police station and lodged a complaint against the accused. Police said that the accused has been booked for rape and a search is on for him.
