Indore : For the first time in the history of the Kamla Nehru Prani Sanghrahalaya (City Zoo), a pair of sloth bear was born in the zoo. After a year of patience of the zoo authorities, the two cubs were born to sloth bear Prabha (8) and Ghajini (5).
Earlier, the zoo officials tried mating Prabha with another bear Krishna. But the experiment did not work. However, Prabha and Ghajini were later kept in the same enclosure with a motive to befriend them. After a year of friendship, finally the two mated and the two cubs were born. The zoo authorities are making all efforts to avoid any ill-effect of the weather on the cubs. Several measures are also being taken by them to protect the cubs. However, Prabha is not leaving the cubs and is not allowing anyone to go near to them.
The sloth (Prabha) is given non-vegetarian food as per her requirement. Zoo officials said that the general public would be able to get a glance of the cubs only after few weeks when they grow a little. Now the city zoo has five animals of the breed.
Why named as Ghajini?
Zoo incharge Dr Uttam Yadav shared the reason behind the naming the five-year-old male bear as Ghajini. He said that before the animals was brought to the zoo, it was attacked by people as it strayed into their land. It was later rescued and brought to the zoo. For weeks, Ghajini wasn’t able to walk and was injured severely. After continuous efforts the animal was saved. Yadav recalled that the animal had even lost its memory due to brain injuries. However, the bear is now healthy.
Pot for Python
The zoo authorities have put pots with holes and other items to keep the python warm in the reptile’s enclosure. This would help the reptile to maintain its body temperature, sources said.
