Burhanpur (Madhya Pradesh): SK Singh, the joint director of urban administration in Rewa division, took charge as commissioner of Burhanpur Municipal Corporation on Monday.

Talking to reporters, he said his priorities will be implementation of public welfare schemes, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and cleanliness.

Singh replaces BD Bhumarkar who was suspended following report of district collector Praveen Singh. Bhumarkar was charged with negligence of duties like not implementing public welfare schemes and ensuring cleanliness, a reason Burhanpur lagged behind in rating during Swachhta Abhiyan. The city lagged behind in Open Defecation Free (ODF) work too.

The new municipal commissioner has challenging tasks before him. Due to water supply and sewer work, the water supply and sewage disposal have been adversely affected. The payment to beneficiaries of PMAY is another challenge as many instalments have not been released.
