Kolkata : Soharab Ali, the Trinamool Congress legislator from Raniganj in Burdwan district was convicted and he has been awarded two years’ sentence by an Asansol Court on charges of pilfering railway scraps on Tuesday.
The court also convicted three other associates of the MLA in the same case. The case was registered way back in 1995 when some scrap materials of the Eastern Railway were stolen. The court has also given three months time to the convicts for an appeal before a higher court. Reacting on the incident, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee, prominent CPI(M) leader and advocate said that on moral grounds, Soharab Ali should immediately submit his resignation to the Speaker of the legislative assembly.
Hasim Abdul Halim, former Speaker of state Assembly said that the present Speaker Biman Banerjee should immediately terminate Ali’s membership from the Legislative Assembly and seek a by-election. Rahul Sinha, West Bengal BJP president said that chief minister Mamata Banerjee should issue a statement on the issue. He alleged that many other ruling party leaders were also involved in many criminal activities.
