BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy on Sunday took to Twitter, seemingly with a dig at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, even as he lauded Gujarat's efforts to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I am impressed that Gujarat accounts for only 1.6% of the Coronavirus cases in India while Delhi accounts for 9%. Shree 420 only appears on TV daily but does nothing for Delhi," he tweeted.
According to health ministry data, as of Sunday morning, Gujarat has recorded 54626 positive cases, of which 12695 remain active while 2300 people have passed away.
While the state had, in the initial months, had a comparatively high number of cases and fatalities, Delhi has far surpassed it now. The National Capital has recorded more than 1.29 lakh positive cases, of which 3806 people have passed away. But while there had been a massive spike in cases some time ago, Delhi appears to have regained control of the situation now.
Interestingly, Delhi at present has a comparatively lower number of active cases, with 12657 people fighting the virus.
Who or what is Shree 420?
Swamy's reference, in all likelihood aimed at the Aam Aadmi Party Chief, can be traced back to a 1950s movie about a confidence trickster who adopted that way of life after being swayed by unscrupulous individuals. The number 420 is thought to be a reference to the same section of the Penal Code -- which pertains to cheating.
Directed and produced by Raj Kapoor, the film starred him and Nargis.
