New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took a U-turn in his earlier stance on talks with Pakistan. In an interview with the BBC. The J&K CM said that there is no scope for talks with Pakistan as it is meddling in the internal affairs of the union territory. Notably, last year, Abdullah batted for talks between India and Pakistan.

"I don't think (they ever stopped meddling. It would be foolish for any of us to suggest that what Jammu and Kashmir has seen has been purely indigenous, without any outside assistance whatsoever. That said, trying to get Pakistan to take on board some of the Government of India's concerns so that we can establish a friendly working relationship is something the national conference has always talked about," Abdullah told the interviewer.

When asked if there is any scope of talks with Pakistan at present, the J&K CM said, "At the moment, that scope that we would like to see isn't there. Not at all? Well, when you have the sort of attacks that you've had in Jammu and Kashmir over the last few years, the way security forces have been targeted, construction camps, etc., it becomes very difficult to tell the Government of India that they have to talk."

When Abdullah was asked if there is any possibility of Special Autonomous Status (Article 370) being restored in Jammu and Kashmir till Modi is Prime Minister of India, he said, "No! simple as that." However, the J&K CM wanted to have amicable relations with the BJP-led Centre.

Notably, before the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the Jammu and Kashmir CM and his father Farooq Abdullah pitched for talks with Pakistan to resolve issues.

Last year in October, Omar Abdullah took oath as the Jammu and Kashmir CM. In the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls, the National Conference won 42 seats, while its alliance partner the Congress managed to bag six seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged 29 seats and the Mehbooba Mufti's People's Democratic Party (PDP) secured only three seats.
