New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi is firm on not taking back his resignation as the Congress president that he tendered after the Lok Sabha poll defeat, nor will he assume any role in the selection of his successor.
Approached in the Parliament House for comments by a Hindi daily of Delhi naming Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot as the likely Congress President, Rahul told reporters:
"The party has to choose the successor. The party and its senior leaders will decide. I have no role to play in it. It will become complicated if I get involved."
Gehlot, who has the reputation to rush to the social media on each and every issue, remained silent on the speculation about him as the Congress president.
The only tweet from him Thursday afternoon was that his government will pay airfare for the state’s senior citizens to go on a pilgrimage to Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu.
There is no clarity how long the Congress will take to have the new president as the seniors like Dr Manmohan Singh, A K Antony and Ahmed Patel see no one else fill Rahul''s vacuum at the current stage.
while Rahul again asserted on Thursday that he won''t return as the party president since there has to be an "accountability in the system" and he had no choice but to go for the party''s abysmal performance in the elections.
The NDTV news channel quoted him asserting that he has even refused to discuss with the party leaders on who should be the new party president. "I am not going to get involved in that process, otherwise it will complicate things and it''s for the party to decide."
