New Delhi: The first appointment by Rahul Gandhi on Friday as the Congress President after over a month of resignation owning responsibility for the poll debacle triggered speculation that he is back in saddle to put an end to the uncertainty.

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal was so far announcing decisions by the AICC and not by the party president on Friday announced appointment of Mohan Markam as the Chhattisgarh Congress President replacing Bhupesh Baghel, who became the chief minister six months ago.

In a press release, he said: “Hon’ble Congress President has appointed Shri Mohan Markam as the new President of Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect.” So far, Venugopal was himself taking decisions on behalf of the AICC since Rahul refused to even look at the proposals for the decisions.

Inquiries in Rahul’s office, however, showed that he does not shirk responsibilities and hence functioning as the party president until the Congress leaders find his successor as he does not want damage to the party due to the vacuum at the top.
