Kolkata: A year after the poll debacle of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2021 Assembly election, ace Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty who had joined the saffron party ahead of Assembly election visited Kolkata and stated that he visited the city after his ‘party’ asked him to do so.

“The top central leaders in the national capital had given me a task and I have visited Kolkata to discuss the same with the state president and other seniors. I could not visit the city in between as I had health issues and now that I am fit I will work for the party and abide by the instructions given to me,” said Chakraborty, stating that he will not ‘specify’ the roles given to him.

When asked about the poll debacle of BJP, the actor-turned-politician said that he feels bad about the debacle but also happy that the saffron camp had risen to 77 from earlier 3 MLAs.

Chakraborty also expressed his ‘grief’ for the BJP cadres who had died in alleged post-poll violence.

“The party workers should be given more boost and now I think things in Bengal BJP will change for the better. I feel sad for those who have died in the post-poll violence,” added Chakraborty.

When asked whether he will contest the 2024 Lok Sabha election and also what he feels about the poor performance of BJP in bypolls and municipal elections, he said that he will not go to any ‘sabha’.

“I had resigned from one sabha and won’t go to any other sabha. For me I want to work for the people of Bengal and for that some power is needed. I will specify my roles later as I just believe in ‘Bangla Sabha’. In maximum cases bypolls are won by the state government and Lok Sabha is a vast thing. I would pray that BJP gets more seats than 18 seats won in the 2019 election,” further added the actor-turned-politician.

Declining to comment on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s statement on ‘Jihad’, Chakraborty said, “Jihaad has several meanings and is a huge word and I won’t comment on this word. Everyone has the right to say what he/she thinks.”
