NEW DELHI: Delhi lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay on Monday moved the Supreme Court for empowering the Election Commission to reject nominations of contesting candidates and de-register the political parties for seeking votes in the basis of religion, race, caste, community or language.

He also urged the court to declare misquoting of the judicial orders and directions by the contesting candidates and office-bearers of political parties (as done by Rahul Gandhi) for electoral gain as a corrupt practice. He also called for directions to the Centre to ascertain feasibility of implementing recommendations of the Law Commission in its 267th report on hate speech.
