New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Friday advanced hearing on a Gujarat ordinance providing 10% quota to the economically backward students, including the agitating Patel community. The hearing has been now fixed on September 9 instead of September 19 as fixed in the last hearing. The Gujarat Government, which has come in appeal against the Gujarat High Court striking down the ordinance, sought an early hearing since the counseling for medical admissions has to be completed before September 30.
While quashing the ordinance, the High Court had stayed operation of its order for a fortnight on the state government’s plea to let it move the apex court.
The Supreme Court admitted the case for hearing on August 22 but with a rider that no admissions shall be granted on the basis of 10% quota carved out for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category.
