New Delhi : Activists of the Aam Aadmi Party Sena (AAPS) staged a protest in the national capital on Saturday against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his government. Wearing white “Gandhi Topis (caps) with AAPS written in red, the placard carrying protesters lampooned Kejriwal and his administration for not fulfilling the promise of deploying marshals to protect and ensure the safety of women in buses run by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).

Kejriwal had made this promise during the election campaign that was held for the Delhi State Assembly and formation of a new government in February this year. The protesters shouted slogans like “Arvind Kejriwal Murdabad”, “Mahila Suraksha Commando Kaha Hai” and”Arvind Kejriwal Hai Hai” to express their anger and anxiousness over the issue. The issue of safety of women in the national capital has been of great concern since the rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman student in a running bus on the outskirts of Delhi in December 2012.

Though laws regarding rape and women safety have been amended and been given more teeth, incidents of rape and harassment of women continue to be reported and often make media headlines, casting a black mark on the administration and the law enforcement agencies.
