Veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini condole loss of lives in Mumbai bridge collapse

New Delhi: Bollywood stars condoled the loss of lives after a foot over bridge (FOB) near the bustling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CMST) railway station in Mumbai collapsed, killing as many as six people and injuring over 30.

Expressing grief over the incident, megastar Amitabh Bachchan tweeted, “In grief and in silent prayer .. !! Mumbai city.” Actor-turned-politician Hemamalini took to Twitter and extended condolences to the bereaving families. “Tragedy- this time in the heart of Mumbai! The foot overbridge at the CST suddenly collapsed killing 5 people & injuring at least 36. I pray for those who have lost their lives & for those now in hospital for treatment” she tweeted.

Actor Riteish Deshmukh also extended condolences and expressed anger over the incident. “What a horrible tragedy.. so sad to know that many have lost lives. My deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones & prayers for the injured. This #MumbaiBridgeCollapse should have been avoided. This negligence is unpardonable” he wrote.

“Distressed at the news of the fall of part of the overbridge at CST. Praying for the injured. Commuter safety needs attention and hoping that authorities act to prevent such incidents” veteran cricketer Sachin Tendulkar tweeted.

Deeply saddened by the incident, cricketer Yuvraj Singh extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims on Twitter. He wrote, “Extremely Tragic, deeply saddened by the loss of many lives. My heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. #MumbaiBridgeCollapse. A big slab of the FOB came crashing down at around 7.20 pm yesterday due to which several pedestrians were injured. Teams from NDRF, Mumbai Police, Fire Brigade and other rescue agencies reached the spot and immediately evacuated those buried under the rubble and shifted them to hospitals.

An FIR has been registered against officials concerned of the Central Railway and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under section 304A (Causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code at the Azaad Maidan Police Station. The Maharashtra government announced ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the kin of those who were killed in the tragic incident.

Thursday’s incident is the second major bridge collapse in Mumbai within a span of nine months. Two people were killed and five others injured when Gokhale Bridge over Andheri railway station in suburban Mumbai collapsed on July 3, 2018.
