Talking about her romantic role in ‘Raanjhanaa’ she confesses how it fills the vacuum of not having real life romance.
The style diva of Bollywood has few films to her name but Sonam Kapoor reiterates that she is satisfied with her state of affairs, as she prefers quality to quantity. She also confesses how her onscreen characters provide her a golden opportunity to relive the romance of life.
Sonam is excited about wearing skirts in ‘Raanjhanaa’ as it reminded her of school days. “Though, I have studied in a school in Mumbai, it was conservative. While I was 15 years old in the tenth grade, we were not allowed to wear skirts. Also, we had to follow a certain dress code and use white ribbons. However, wearing skirts in ‘Raanjhanaa’ with two plaits made me look young and carefree. This character refreshed my school days memories,” says the style diva.
Sonam has picked up a leaf or two from Jaya Bachchan’s character in ‘Guddi’ and shares, “Yes! I watched this film ‘Guddi’ and especially the scene in which Jaya auntie enters the school assembly a little late. The naughtiness as well as the innocence on her face proved to be inspirational for me. The expression, which Jayaji excelled in, was indeed exuberant and I tried to pick up the passion as well as the innocence from Jaya auntie’s scene.”
Talking about what success means to her, Sonam shares her take on it and says, “The success of my life cannot be measured with the success of my career. I have been in the industry for just eight or nine years and I have hardly done six films. I feel when I will grow up and look back at my career graph, I’ll feel proud to have done roles like Bitto, Ayesha, Zoya and Sakeena. I chose good films over commercial films. I worked with Abhishek Bachchan in ‘Players’ but ‘Delhi 6’ was appreciated more. I am happy that I am doing varied characters’. I do not want to be type cast.”
Expressing her views about the on screen chemistry with southern superstar, Dhanush she says, “Chemistry happens to be good merely because the script is written well and also if we follow the director’s vision. Chemistry is also created by moments during enacting a scene. Kareena and Shahid’s chemistry was great in ‘Jab We Met’.” When asked whether it was because they were in a relationship? She replies, “No, I do not think so because many other films of theirs released while they were in a relationship and they were flops. It is the momentum given to scenes that helps creating sizzling chemistry on screen.”
Sonam finds Dhanush very simple and shares, “He is a dedicated, modest, simple yet a very energetic actor. I learnt few important things from him.” Talking about how she agreed to do a film with her co-actor, she confides, “When Aanand sir came to me and showed a photo of Dhanush with a ‘gamchcha’ drapped across his head, I instantly agreed to work with him.”
Sharing her experience of working with director, Aanand Rai, she says, “I was the first choice of Aanand and I was happy because I had missed working with him in ‘Tanu Weds Manu’. Kangana suited the role but when he came to me this time, I did not want to miss working with this brilliant director.”
She rues that her real life romance has not been that happening as her on screen romantic roles and shares, “My romantic life has totally been unsuccessful. I am single unquestionably. While in love — one needs to be ready to forgive the other, there need to be capacity for human compassion and heal all the bitterness. I feel we can fall in love over and over again.”
“I am happy doing the ‘Raanjhanaa’, it feels nice to have dipped my hand into the tub of emotions on reel and feel satisfied for what I have failed to get in my real life,” shares the diva who is reveling at the opportunity to experience romance on reel that she can’t get in her real life.
