Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic on Sanjay Dutt starring Ranbir Kapoor in the title role will go on floors next year. While there are rumours that the actor was paid 5 crore for the biopic, an industry source tells us that its a barter between Sanju baba and Raju Hirani. The deal was that Sanju Baba allows Rajkumar Hirani to make a biopic on his life, and in return, he would make a film for Sanjay Dutt — Munnabhai Chale Amreeka — after he completes his jail sentence. Every actor in the country today wants to work with Raju Hirani.
Says a source, “On many occasions, when he and Raju worked together, Sanju often talked about his life story. The filmmaker was fascinated by his life story. He felt that it would be an interesting, intense and emotional story to tell. He approached Sanju to make a biopic on him. Sanju agreed as he felt that his life story needed to be told by someone sensitive, sympathetic and who has an understanding of what he’s been through in life. No other actor in Bollywood has led such a checkered life and career.”
It has also been learnt that the Sanjay Dutt biopic is an unabashed portrayal of the actor’s life which will touch upon areas like his relationship with his father, his three marriages and his connection with the underworld.
The source adds that Raju and his writer Abhijat Joshi sat with the actor and worked out the script. It will be a bold and brutally honest film covering the actor’s tryst with the underworld, his relationship with his father Sunil Dutt, Sanju’s three marriages with Richa Sharma (and their daughter Trishala), Rhea Pillai and touching briefly on his present wife Manaayata (and their two children Shahran and Iqra). Adds the source, “Sanju, suggested Ranbir Kapoor’s name to play him as he is very fond of the Kapoor boy. They even worked out together at his personal gym on the ground level of Dutt’s high-rise in Bandra. Sanjay and Manaayata have complete creative control over the script and Raju will be showing the rushes to the actor at every point. Sanju is expected to make an entry during the end.”
