Tommorrowland. Happy Hunting Ground. Valhalla. Swarga. Heaven. Everybody wants to go that place in the sky where everyone lives happily ever after. In Brad “Ratatouille” Bird’s new film, the principal characters, namely cynical inventor Frank Walker (George Clooney) and sassy, optimistic young Casey Newton (Britt Robertson) are on a quest to find the titular futuristic city (which pays homage to one of the five original “lands” of Disneyland themed to the future and outer space).
Walker wasn’t always that way. Dispirited that is after being exiled from Tommorrowland for inventing something that threatened its existence. As a 11 year old boy, (Thomas Robinson) he was a genius inventor of a jetpack that could have taken him (and the world) places if he hadn’t been rejected at the 1964 World’s Fair by David Nix (Hugh Laurie).

Nix tells Frank to return when he’s older with an invention that works properly. But Athena (Raffey Cassidy) sees potential in Frank and smuggles him into ‘Tomorrowland’. They are happy together as children can be until Frank is found out and expelled, but not before learning, much in the manner of Harrison Ford in Blade Runner, that his much loved Athena is actually a robot.
Full of surprises, the action-packed storyline highlights extraterrestrials and inter-dimensional travel, with themes of destiny and saving the world. Casey is not only a curious, science-loving teenager, she also exemplifies the spirit of hope, daring and resistance.
