Fanney Khan, a musical comedy film explores the father-daughter relationship under the notes of music. The directorial debut project of Atul Manjrekar stars Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rajkummar Rao in lead roles. The film is a remake of the 2002 Belgian film ‘Everybody’s Famous!’

Going by Bollywood’s adaptation scheme, this isn’t the first time a film has been remade to suit the Indian audience. Apparently, Anil Kapoor has a higher score compared to his contemporaries when it comes to starring in films inspired by already existing reels. We take a look at ten such films of the jhakaas actor that were a remake of foreign movies.

Andar Baahar 1984- 48 Hrs 1982

This action packed movie starred Anil Kapoor alongside Jackie Shroff. The film was inspired by Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy starrer 48 Hrs. The story is of a cop and convict who team up to catch two cop-killers.

Tezaab 1988- Streets of fire 1984

This romantic Hindi movie starred Madhuri Dixit alongside Kapoor which got the former her first big break. Especially known for the song “Ek Do Teen” was a chart success. It ran in theatres for more than 50 weeks, becoming a golden jubilee, and it was the highest blockbuster at the box office in 1988. The film was a remake of ‘Streets of fire’ that starred Michael Paré and Diane Lane.

Deewana Mastana 1997- What About Bob? 1991

This one’s a romantic comedy directed by David Dhawan that also starred Govinda and Juhi Chawla in pivotal roles. This film also has Salman Khan for a brief period in the end and was the only time Khan was paired with Chawla. This film borrowed some elements from the 1991 Hollywood comedy, What About Bob? Which had Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss.

Musafir 2004- U-Turn 1997

This 2004 thriller is multi-starrer film with Aditya Pancholi, Sameera Reddy and Sanjay Dutt along with Kapoor. The film entered controversy due to some intimate scenes between Kapoor and Reddy. The film has been described as “a take-off on” Oliver Stone’s 1997 thriller, U Turn which is based on the book Stray Dogs by John Ridley. It stars Sean Penn, Billy Bob Thornton, Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, Powers Boothe, Joaquin Phoenix, Claire Danes, and Nick Nolte.

Chocolate: Deep Dark Secrets 2005- The Usual Suspects 1995

Anil Kapoor wears the advocate avatar in this crime thriller which also stars Sushma Reddy, Irrfan Khan, Tanushree Dutta, Sunil Shetty, Arshad Warsi, Emraan Hashmi and the British recording artist Emma Bunton in the lead roles. Despite no mention, the film has been criticised as a copy of Hollywood film The Usual Suspects which stars Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio del Toro, Kevin Pollak, Chazz Palminteri, Pete Postlethwaite, and Kevin Spacey.

Naksha 2006-The Rundown 2003

Naksha doesn’t have Anil Kapoor acting in it but does borrow his voice in the narration. The film is a fantasy action adventure film. Which stars Sunny Deol, Vivek Oberoi, Sameera Reddy and Jackie Shroff. The film was inspired by American action comedy The Rundown starring Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, Christopher Walken, and Rosario Dawson.

Salaam-e-Ishq 2007- Love Actually 2003

This romantic drama anthology film revolves around the lives of six couples in an ensemble of stars that include Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Akshaye Khanna, Ayesha Takia, Arjun rampal, Vidya Balan, Govinda, Shannon Esra, Sohail Khan and Isha Koppikar in lead roles. The film was however a disaster in Bollywood. But very few knew that it was inspired from Love Actually a Christmas-themed romantic comedy film.

Welcome 2007- Mickey Blue Eyes 1999

This comedy flick is a multi-starrer that features a large ensemble cast of Feroz Khan, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Paresh Rawal, and Mallika Sherawat. The film also went on for a sequel Welcome Back but was originally inspired from Mickey Blue Eyes is a 1999 British-American romantic comedy crime film. According to The Hindu, Welcome’s climax scene is a rip-off from the Charlie Chaplin film, The Gold Rush and Michael Madana Kama Rajan. You see its not all that original.

Race 2008- Goodbye Lover 1998

Anil Kapoor has worked in all of the films under Race franchise. This year Race 3 came back with its third instalment with Salman Khan. The original one however was inspired by 1999 American film Goodbye Lover that stars Patricia Arquette, Dermot Mulroney, Don Johnson, Ellen DeGeneres and Mary-Louise Parker.

Yuvvraaj 2008- Rain Man 1988

This 2008 drama film helmed by Subhash Ghai had Salman Khan, Zayed Khan and Katrina Kaif alongside Anil Kapoor in lead roles. Yuvvraaj is a musical story of a fragmented family of three brothers who try to con each other to inherit their father’s wealth. The film is a remake of American comedy drama Rain Man.
