New Delhi: Five films showcasing the stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender will be showcased at a LGBT film festival here next week. Beginning June 25 a three-day festival of dramas and documentaries is being organised by American Center in collaboration with Cinedarbaar.

“Kissing Jessica Stein” starring Jennifer Westfeldt, Heather Juergensen, Tovah Feldshuh about a woman searching for the perfect man instead discovers the perfect woman would begin the festival. The second day of the festival would show films like “But I’m a Cheerleader” starring Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, Michelle Williams, which tells a story of a naive teenager who is sent to rehab camp when her straitlaced parents and friends suspect her of being a lesbian.

“Boys Don’t Cry” starring Hilary Swank, Chloe Sevigny, Peter Sarsgaard, which tells a story of a woman born Teena Brandon who adopts male identity of Brandon Teena and attempts to find himself and love in Nebraska, would also be screened on Day 2 of the festival.

The third day of the festival would show films like “Broke back Mountain” by Ang Lee, a narrative about the forbidden and secretive relationship between two cowboys and their lives over the years.

The closing film of the festival is a documentary film directed by Jenny Mackenzie called “Lead with Love,” a commentary on families reaction towards their children being LGBT. The theme of the festival, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT) is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honour the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan.

The Stonewall riots were a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally, organisers said.

Discussions on LGBT are slated to follow post screenings where themes highlighted in the film will be talked about, organisers said. Quizzes based on the films screened will also be held with prizes sponsored by the American Center.
